As we have defined what is Malignant Mesothelioma? its time to discuss about the occurance or diagnosis of mesothelioma based on different stages , This staging provides information if the malignant mesothelioma cells have been spread to others part of the body. Physicians have to know the stage of the malignant mesothelioma to plan the mesothelioma treatment or mesothelioma diagnosis.
Before explaining malignant mesothelioma stages lets divide the stages into three main sections.

Malignant Mesothelioma is Localized

  • Malignant Mesothelioma Stage I :: The Malignant Mesothelioma can be seen in the chest lining cavity adjacent to heart and lung or sometimes in the diaphram.

  • Malignant Mesothelioma in Advanced
  • Malignant Mesothelioma Stage II :: Mesothelioma has reached beyond the lining of the chest to lymph nodes in the chest.
  • Malignant Mesothelioma Stage III :: Mesothelioma has reached into the chest wall, center of the chest, heart, through the diaphragm, or abdominal lining, and in some cases into nearby lymph nodes.

  • Malignant mesothelioma is a diffuse disease that can affect men more frequently compared to women. Most common three pathalogic types of malignant mesothelioma sarcomatoid, epithelioid, and biphasic. Patients with epithelioid mesothelioma (55-65%) have a slightly better median survival time. Pathologically, the epithelioid subtype can appear similar to adenocarcinoma. Special staining and immunohistochemical and ultrastructural analysis are necessary to differentiate the 2 diseases. Sarcomatoid mesotheliomas (10-15%) are similar in appearance to true sarcomas. Biphasic mesothelioma (20-35%) has both epithelioid and sarcomatoid features. We can see not more than 2,000-3,000 new cases per year in the country. People who get malignant mesothelioma are found to be over 65 years of age. Malignant mesothelioma is infact a rare diesase but is a serious one. The average life span after affected by Malignant Mesothelioma cannot be more than 3 to 4 years.
